Andhra Pradesh is one of India's top mango-growing states. If you are unsure which variety to buy, this guide helps.
Banganapalli (Benishan)
Large, golden and fibreless with mild sweetness. It is the classic Andhra mango for slicing and eating. Buy Banganapalli.
Alphonso
Rich, creamy and fragrant. Often called the king of mangoes, best for eating fresh and for desserts. Buy Alphonso.
Kesar
Saffron-coloured pulp and strong aroma. Very good for aamras and milkshakes. Buy Kesar.
Dasheri
Elongated and very sweet with a soft pulp. Good chilled. Buy Dasheri.
Totapuri
Firm with a tangy taste. Ideal for mango salads, chaat, juice and raw mango pickles. Buy Totapuri.
How to pick a good mango
- Smell the stem end. A sweet fragrance means it is ripe.
- Press gently. It should give slightly, not be mushy.
- Do not choose by colour alone; many varieties stay green when ripe.
